What To Do If Your House Becomes Flooded

Floods happen in low lying areas at times and they can be devastating, traumatic and sad for people who have worked hard to care for and build a home in these areas.

Once the water starts seeping into your house, you should put valuables in a higher ground or a place that cannot be reached by floodwaters (like a taller building or house), if possible. Try to bring things that you think are valuable with you if you are moving away from the flooded location. Make sure to also avoid touching electrical cables on your journey because you might get electrocuted. Turn off the main switch for the house electrical system as well once the water starts rising.

Move to higher ground before night time. This could be a house where water cannot reach for you to be able to rest and spend the night in, dry and safe from the devastating flood and cold.

If possible, bring food for the children and some of the young people who might need it even if you are rushing to get out of the flood. Children need food and they can get hungry on the journey to higher ground. Make sure that they have something to munch on during the journey or to the destination that you are headed for.

If the flood is fast and has reached your home without warning, call for help if you need it in order for you to be rescued. If the flood has ruined your home, make sure to have some means of communication to call and alert people who may be able to help you. Call the disaster hotline if you have one in your locality to get the help you need.

Evacuate to your local evacuation centre. Most localities have evacuation centres set for those affected by floods. Go there and some will provide medicines you might need, food, shelter for the time being and water for your needs. Prepare for the crowd of people that you might encounter in the evacuation centres but these are safer than what you have in your flooded home.

Be patient with what the evacuation centre has to offer until things get better and the flood subsides. Relocating to the evacuation centre may be uncomfortable but it is the best site for the meantime to avoid the dangers that the flood brings.

Prepare for the worst because the food might be scarce in the evacuation centre. The transport of food and other necessities may be also scarce because of the flood that may have affected other areas around your locality and the passageways towards your location. Be patient with what the evacuation centre has to give you. Once, the flood is gone, you might be able to get back to your normal life, get back to work and do your business again. Getting back to work will help you earn the money you need for your basic necessities and some wants.

Think that you will be able to recover from the loss. Once the floods are gone, you will be able to get back to work, and perhaps build a home that you and your family will enjoy. Floods happen every now and then in the plains. They are truly devastating at times, especially when we lose people we love, but we have to keep going and living so that we can help our living loved ones and make more beautiful memories after the floods.

Have a lovely day or night.
